Signature toolRichard Findley Signature Beading & Parting tool £65 UK/£95 Worldwide

Shipping options

The beading & parting tool is a traditional British tool, a hybrid between a skew chisel and a parting tool that has been used by spindle production turners for many years. My Signature tool is the most refined version of the tool, made from Cryogenically treated high-speed steel by Crown Tools of Sheffield and supplied ground to my specification, just as I use in my workshop on a daily basis. One of the main features are the rounded leading edges, which are sharp and square on the standard tool. The rounded edges make my signature tool incredibly comfortable in the hand and allow it to travel smoothly along the tool rest.

I use Chestnut or Treatex finishes in my workshop, depending on the end-use. Both manufacturers produce the finest quality finishes and come highly recommended.

Treatex Hardwax OilTreatex Hardwax Oil – £8.00

Container size

A natural blend of oils and waxes which produces a hard-wearing satin finish. Certified as food and toy safe. Easy to apply and my personal favourite finish. The exclusive 200ml bottle is ideal for small users like woodturners, the 1-litre tin is perfect for larger areas such as kitchen worktops. I use the dome buffing brush to bring it to a deeper, more lustrous finish.

Available for worldwide shipping, please email for details.

Acrylic spray lacquerAcrylic Lacquer – £7.50

Select sheen level

When I don’t want an oil finish I turn to one of these fantastic lacquers. Available in gloss or satin, they are easy to apply and leave a very hard-wearing and attractive finish. I like to apply three coats, rubbing back with a Nyweb pad before the final coat. 400ml aerosol, ideal for use with the AeroGun.

Acrylic Sanding SealerAcrylic Sanding Sealer – £7.50

An ideal base for the acrylic lacquers and also a great way to deal with grain issues in bowl turning. Apply liberally to rough areas and re-turn with a sharp gouge and tear out will be greatly reduced. 400ml aerosol.

Cellulose Sanding SealerCellulose Sanding Sealer – £10.00

One of Chestnut’s best selling products, like the acrylic aerosol version above, works as a base for lacquers, paints and waxes and to help support fibres in areas of tear-out. Can be thinned with Cellulose Thinners if required, as it can thicken over time.

Melamine LacquerMelamine Lacquer – £11.00

If you prefer to apply lacquer with a cloth or brush rather than by spraying, then this is the ideal product. Can be slightly thinned with Cellulose Thinners to allow easier spreading and better penetration into the wood. Dries quickly but fully cures over a longer period, after which it can be buffed to a high shine. Compatible with wax finishes.

Cellulose ThinnersCellulose Thinners – £9.00

Used to thin Melamine Lacquer and Cellulose Sanding Sealer and to clean tools. A high-quality cellulose product without harmful petroleum solvents such as Toluene or Xylene.

Woodwax 22WoodWax 22 (Clear) – £9.50

A traditional blend of waxes that I use most for restoration work where old wood needs reviving. Best applied with a Nyweb pad to smooth and clean the surface as it is applied.  Can be buffed with a buffing brush and/or soft cotton cloth. Also perfect for adding extra sheen over other finishes or sanding sealer. Clear is best for new work to which you want to add sheen, I use the brown version in restoration, where the depth of colour of a dark brown wax is welcome. It will also highlight the grain in open-grained wood such as Ash and Oak. 450ml tin.

Microcrystalline WaxMicrocrystalline Wax – £10.50

A blend of waxes which uses a Microcrystalline formula to achieve a hard-wearing, water repellent finish. Because it has a higher melting point than most standard waxes, this is ideal for work that will be handled a lot. Supplied in a 225ml tin – a little goes a long way!

Finishing oilFinishing Oil – £9.50

A traditional favourite, tung based oil. Much thinner than the modern hard wax oils, this penetrates deeply and can be used for outdoor work. Gloss levels build with multiple coats and further shine can be added with a coat of wax.

Food safe finishFood Safe Finish – £9.50

A simple mineral oil wipe-on finish which offers short term protection to items that will come into contact with food, such a chopping boards and wooden spoons. Leaves a satin finish on your kitchenware.

Ebonising LacquerEbonising Lacquer – £7.50

A simple to use aerosol lacquer that gives a beautiful black finish for feature areas on turned work. Quick-drying acrylic-based lacquer can be used on its own or with one of the acrylic lacquers and/or wax to change the sheen level. 400ml aerosol.

AeroGunChestnut Products AeroGun – £6.00

The new AeroGun fits any aerosol spray can (aerosol sold separately) and turns a spray can into a spray gun, making it more comfortable and easier to use for a single job or larger spray run. Fits all of the Chestnut cans (and most other types of spray can) and can be used and re-used without need for cleaning like a conventional spray gun.

150mm x 240g Sanding discs

Sanding discs to fit the Hope disc sander, listed above.

Hope CaliperHope Callipers – £35

A strange-looking set of callipers, but like all Hope products, they are designed by a woodturner, for woodturners. These callipers are in frequent use in my workshop. The unique design ensures ease of use and the laser-etched measuring scale makes turning an even wall thickness a breeze.

Dome Buffing Brush

Chestnut Dome Buffing Brush – £35

Buffing brushes have long been used to bring a wax polish up to a shine. I use this buffing brush on my lathe in conjunction with the Treatex Hardwax Oil, which has a wax content. After three or four coats of oil are dry on the work, I take it to the buffing brush and gently brush over the work at around 1000rpm. This evens out the finish and adds depth and lustre to it. Can be mounted on the Chestnut buffing system or directly into the chuck or drill chuck.

Duplicating FingersDuplicating Fingers – Set of 5 £65

Number of fingers

Duplicating fingers are ideal for production turners and those that make batches of identical work, reducing the need for callipers and other measuring devices, helping to speed up the process and increase levels of accuracy. Available singly or in sets of five or ten. Click here to see one of my Instagram posts about how I set them up and use them.

Sticks of pewterPewter Sticks – £21.00 each

High quality, lead-free, low-melt Pewter sticks are ideal for easy melting, casting and turning to add interest to your turned projects. The average weight of each stick is 210g, enough for the rim of a small bowl or turned button in the top of a couple of boxes, for example.
