Description

Buffing is an important stage in the finishing process if your aim is a high gloss finish. I stock several items to help achieve this. Details of each item are below, simply select the items you want from the dropdown menu and add them to the basket.

These items can be sent overseas but an additional shipping charge will apply so please email before ordering.

Coarse Buffing Mop- This mop should be used with the Vonax buffing compound. Once the item is sanded, mount the wheel in the chuck with the mandrel and run the lathe at around 1500rpm. Apply the Vonax buffing compound sparingly to the mop while it is spinning and then buff the item until shiny. Exotics such as African Blackwood do not require a finish as they are already quite oily so can be buffed after sanding to around 1200 grit. You can buff items finished with oil or lacquer – once fully cured – to give a high shine.

Soft Buffing Mop- This soft wheel should be used with carnauba wax as described above. This will give a little extra shine and protection to your item. This can be used without the previous step on items finished with lacquer or oil to give an improved level of shine.

Mandrel- This extension mandrel has been designed to fit in any standard chuck jaws and is threaded to accept any of the buffing mops and the dome brush. It is the perfect length to ensure you are working well away from your chuck as you buff and polish. The mops and dome brush simply unscrew from the Mandrel and are interchangeable.

Vonax Buffing Compound- Used with the ‘Coarse Buffing Wheel’ this compound is an ultra-fine abrasive and will bring your item up to a high shine. Apply sparingly while the mop is spinning, then buff your item. 800g bar. Vegan-friendly.

Carnauba Wax Stick- Used with the ‘Soft Buffing Mop’, applied to the mop sparingly while spinning at around 1500rpm. This can be used on its own, after buffing with Vonax or after finishing with other products to achieve a higher level of sheen. Food safe and Vegan-friendly.

Dome Buffing Brush- Buffing brushes have long been used to bring wax polishes up to a shine – think cleaning leather shoes. I use this product after using Treatex Hardwax Oil. Once the finish is fully cured, buff the item with this dome brush to even out the sheen and add depth and lustre to your project, leaving a silky smooth feel. Made of natural fibres, this dome brush comes with its own short mandrel but can also be mounted on the Mandrel extension to give increased clearance from the chuck.
